Ingredients
For the Sausage Filling:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- 1 lb ground sausage (breakfast sausage, Italian sausage, or your favorite variety)
- 1 medium onion , chopped
- 2 cloves garlic , minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chicken broth (or beef broth for a richer flavor)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream or whole milk
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper , to taste
For the Biscuit Topping:
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough (or homemade biscuit dough)
- Optional: 1 tablespoon melted butter for brushing
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) .
Step 2: Cook the Sausage Filling
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat.
- Add the sausage and cook until browned and crumbled, about 5–7 minutes. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Stir in the onion and cook for 3–4 minutes, or until softened. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Sprinkle the flour over the sausage mixture and stir to coat. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in the chicken broth , stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 3–5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Stir in the heavy cream , thyme , rosemary , salt , and pepper . Simmer for 2–3 minutes, then remove from heat.
Step 3: Assemble the Pie
- Transfer the sausage filling to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Separate the biscuit dough into individual biscuits. Flatten each biscuit slightly with your hands or a rolling pin.
- Arrange the biscuits on top of the sausage filling, overlapping slightly to cover the surface.
- Optional: Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter for extra flavor and browning.
