1 pound of dried split peas, washed.
1 large ham bone with meat or 2 cups of diced ham
1 big onion, cut into pieces 3 carrots, peeled and cut 3 celery sticks, cut 2 garlic cloves, minced
1 leaf from the bay tree
1 teaspoon of dried thyme
6 cups of chicken broth
Add salt and pepper according to your preference.
Instructions
Start by washing your dried split peas with cold water until the water is clear.
In your slow cooker, put together the washed peas, ham bone or diced ham, chopped onion, carrots, celery, and minced garlic.
Put in the bay leaf, thyme, and chicken broth. Mix everything thoroughly.
4. Put a lid on the pot and cook on low heat for 8 hours, or until the peas are completely soft and the soup has become thicker.
After cooking, take out the ham bone (if you used one) and tear apart any meat left on it. Put the meat back into the soup. Remove the bay leaf.
Add salt and pepper to your liking.
Stir it one last time and serve it hot with your favorite side dishes.
Different Types and Advice
To make the soup smoother, you can use a hand blender to mix it a little. If you want a vegetarian option, just leave out the ham and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth. You can also put in some chopped potatoes or more vegetables like spinach or kale near the end of cooking for extra nutrients.
