Exactly like Nana made it! Divine!

a quarter of a teaspoon of pepper
paprika, 1/4 teaspoon
1/2 tbsp of butter
With salt added to taste.
What to do
You should start by greasing the interior of the slow cooker saucepan with butter.
At the base of the saucepan, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
3. Top the potatoes with the chopped onions and then sprinkle with the cubed ham.
Fourth, top the ham with half of the shredded cheese, and then stack the potatoes, ham, and cheese again.
5. Combine the milk, heavy cream, paprika, black pepper, chopped garlic, and a separate bowl. Whisk to combine.
6. After layering the ingredients in the slow cooker, evenly pour the milk mixture over them.
7. Bring to a simmer and cook, covered, for 6 to 8 hours on low heat or 3 to 4 hours on high, or until potatoes are soft.
8. If you'd like a crunchy top, you may move everything to a baking sheet, top with more cheese, and broil for a few minutes until brown. It's totally optional, but very delicious.

Changes and Hints
Use skim milk instead of whole milk and use low-fat cheese for a lighter version. To give it a little crunch before broiling, sprinkle over a breadcrumb mixture. Substitute sliced mushrooms or chopped bell peppers for the ham for a tasty meatless vegetarian option.
