Simple Hack to Tell if an Avocado is Ripe or Bad

You’re not alone—avocados are a beloved superfood, but picking the perfect one can feel like a gamble. After years of mushy disappointments and rock-hard letdowns, here’s your foolproof guide to choosing the right avocado every time, based on proven tricks (including the famous “stem test”):

🥑 The 3-Step Avocado Selection Method

1. The Stem Test (Your #1 Tool)

  • Find the small brown stem (nub) at the top of the avocado.
  • Gently flick it off with your thumb.
  • Check the color underneath:
    • Bright green = perfectly ripe → eat today
    • 🟡 Yellowish-green = nearly ripe → eat in 1–2 days
    • 🟠 Brown = overripe → may be stringy or bruised inside (okay for smoothies or guac if you trim bad spots)
    • Empty hole or black residue = likely rotten → skip it
This works because avocados ripen from the inside out—the stem reveals the core’s condition.

2. The Gentle Squeeze (Use Sparingly!)

  • Cradle the avocado in your palm (don’t poke with fingertips!).
  • Apply light pressure:
    • Firm with slight give = ripe
    • Hard as a rock = unripe (will take 4–5 days)
    • Very soft or dented = overripe
⚠️ Avoid aggressive squeezing—it bruises the flesh and ruins it for others.
