Crusty sore on my lip won’t go away. Appointment is impossible to get right now. What is this?

  • What it looks/feels like: Honey-colored crusts, often starting as blisters. Can spread easily.
  • More common in kids but can affect adults, especially with broken skin.

5. Allergic or Irritant Contact Dermatitis

  • Triggered by: Lip balms, toothpaste (SLS), citrus, makeup, or even metal (like from musical instruments).
  • Looks like: Red, cracked, itchy, or crusty patch where the irritant touched.

🩹 What You Can Do Right Now (At-Home Care)

Keep it clean and dry – Gently wash with mild soap and water, then pat dry.
Avoid picking or peeling – This delays healing and can cause scarring or infection.
Moisturize gently – Use plain petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to protect and prevent cracking.
Stop using potential irritants – Switch to fragrance-free, dye-free lip balm and SLS-free toothpaste.
Sun protection – Use a lip balm with SPF 30+ if going outside.

Don’t apply hydrocortisone unless you’re sure it’s not a cold sore—steroids can worsen viral infections.

⚠️ When to Seek Urgent Care (Even Without a Regular Appointment)

Please try to see a doctor—even via telehealth or urgent care—if you notice any of the following:

  • The sore has lasted longer than 2 weeks
  • It’s growing, bleeding, or very painful
  • The area looks ulcerated (like a deep sore, not just a scab)
  • You have numbness, swelling, or spreading redness
  • You have a history of significant sun exposure or skin cancer

In rare cases, a non-healing lip sore can be a sign of squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer), which is treatable when caught early—but it won’t go away on its own.

💡 Temporary Relief While You Wait

  • For suspected cold sores: Over-the-counter docosanol (Abreva) may help shorten healing time if applied early.
  • For suspected fungal/angular cheilitis: Try an antifungal cream (like clotrimazole) twice daily for 7–10 days.
  • For general soothing: Apply a thin layer of medical-grade honey (like Medihoney) or zinc oxide ointment—both have healing and antimicrobial properties.

Hang in there—lip sores are incredibly frustrating, especially when they linger. But your awareness and caution are the right first steps. If it’s not clearly improving in the next 3–5 days, please push to get seen, even at an urgent care clinic or dermatology telehealth service. Your peace of mind (and health) is worth it.

Wishing you quick healing—and I hope you get that appointment soon. 💙
