Ingredients You’ll Need:

For the Potatoes:

  • 4 medium to large russet potatoes (or Yukon Gold for a creamier texture)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or melted butter for extra richness)
  • Salt , to taste
  • Black pepper , freshly ground

Optional Toppings:

  • Butter
  • Sour cream
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Chopped green onions or chives
  • Bacon bits
  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Guacamole or salsa
  • Chili or pulled pork

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat and Prep

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) .
  2. Scrub the potatoes under cold water to remove dirt, then pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels. Dry skin is key for achieving a crispy exterior.

Step 2: Pierce and Season

  1. Use a fork to pierce each potato several times on all sides. This allows steam to escape during baking and prevents the potatoes from bursting.
  2. Rub each potato generously with olive oil or melted butter. The fat helps crisp up the skin.
  3. Sprinkle the potatoes evenly with salt and pepper, ensuring all sides are coated.

Step 3: Bake Until Tender

  1. Place the potatoes directly on the middle rack of the oven, or on a baking sheet lined with foil for easy cleanup.
  2. Bake for 45–60 minutes , depending on the size of the potatoes. Larger potatoes may need closer to 60 minutes.
  3. To check for doneness, insert a fork or knife into the center of a potato—it should slide in easily. Alternatively, squeeze the potato gently (using an oven mitt!) to feel if it’s soft.

Step 4: Fluff and Serve

  1. Remove the potatoes from the oven and let them cool slightly.
  2. Slice each potato open lengthwise and fluff the inside with a fork to release steam and create a light, airy texture.
  3. Add your favorite toppings—butter, sour cream, shredded cheese, chives, bacon bits, or anything else that strikes your fancy.
