Ingredients
For the Sloppy Joe Mixture:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion , finely chopped
- 1 medium bell pepper , finely chopped (optional)
- 3 cloves garlic , minced
- 1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper , to taste
For the Garlic Bread Base:
- 1 loaf French bread or Italian bread , sliced lengthwise
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter , melted
- 3 cloves garlic , minced
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Optional: Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
For Topping:
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or mozzarella cheese
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Sloppy Joe Mixture
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion , bell pepper (if using), and garlic . Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Drain any excess grease.
- Stir in the tomato sauce , ketchup , Worcestershire sauce , brown sugar , mustard , garlic powder , onion powder , salt , and pepper . Simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Step 2: Prepare the Garlic Bread
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) .
- In a small bowl, mix the melted butter , minced garlic , and Parmesan cheese .
- Place the bread halves cut-side up on a baking sheet. Brush the garlic butter mixture generously over the bread.
- Optional: Sprinkle extra Parmesan cheese or parsley over the bread for added flavor.
